The Case Western Reserve University’s Center for Professional Ethics Newsletter has been digitized and made available on the library’s scholarly commons.

The Center for Professional Ethics was created in 1978 and is supported by the David and Katherine Ragone Endowment Fund. It was co-founded by Robert P. Lawry, Professor of Law, and Robert W. Clarke, Director of the Case Western Reserve University’s Christian Movement. Both are now retired. Currently, Professor Cassandra Burke Robertson is the Director of the Center.

The newsletter covers a wide variety of ethics topics with a focus on legal, medical, and professional ethics:

Professional Ethics

Ethical Responsibilities in Higher Education: Experiential Learning as a Model for Reform (Volume 2, Issue 4, 2000)

Ethics, Character and the Professional, by Robert P. Lawry (Fall 1987)

Professional Power and Self Regulation (October 1986)

Continuing The Observer Debate: A Panel Discussion on Law, Religion, and Homosexuality (Volume 2, Issue 3, 2000)

Law and Morality by Robert P. Lawry (January 1987)

Preparation for Practice; The Ethical Dimension by M.C. "Terry" Hokenstad (November 1987)

Ethics, Dentists, and Change by Sean Stephen Wotman (January 1988)

Nursing Ethics by Barbara J. Daly (Summer 1987)

Physician-Assisted Suicide: Morally Permissible? (Volume 1, Issue 1, 1998)

The newsletter also addressed important ethics issues of the day:

America's Role in The World: Understanding Muslims and Islam (Volume 4, Issue 1, 2003)

Industry-Sponsored Research -- What's Wrong? Professor Andrew Trew Talks About IRBs, Ethics and Patients (Volume 4, Issue 2, 2003)

Leadership in the Global Perspective, Dr. Kazuo Inamori Speaks (Volume 4, Issue 3, 2003)

One Year Later: Remembering September 11, 2001 (Volume 4, Issue 1, 2003)

Interested in “discussing” your thoughts on an ethical issue, read the “Doing Ethics!” column:

Benevolence (Fall 1992 and Spring 1994)

The Bodies (Fall 1989 and Winter 1990)

Ethics in the Military: Confidentiality (Fall 1990 and Winter 1991)

Office Thievery (Spring/Summer 1990 and Winter 1990)

Promise Keeping (Spring 1992 and Fall 1992)

As all collections on the library’s scholarly commons the newsletter is full text searchable; use the search box in the middle of the left side menu. (Research Note: I did a search for “Hastings Center” and came up with 12 results; "baseball", 5. The results will get you to the issue. To find your search term in the issue, download the pdf and do a control F search.)

The collection consists of 41 issues from 1986 until 2003. You may notice volume 1, issue 1 is the middle of our collection of the Center for Professional Ethics Newsletter.  In 1998 substantial changes were made to the content and look of the newsletter and it was decided that these changes merited starting again with a first issue, see Volume 1, Issue 1,1998. The library is aware that there may be other issues of this newsletter. If you have any additional issues, we would appreciate if you would send us copies.  Please send them to:
