On January 27, 2018, Case Western Reserve University School of Law’s International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Team won the 2018 Chicago Vis Pre-Moot Competition. The team was represented by Douglas Pilawa (2L and Captain of the team), Sabrina Morris (2L), Kathleen Burke (1L), Teresa Azzam (1L), Daniel Kalmbach (1L), and Christopher Lauer (1L). Ananya Mallavarapu (3L) could not attend the competition, but helped prepare the team by serving as a mock arbitrator in practice rounds, along with the team’s coaches, Professors Timothy Webster and Katy Mercer.

Hosted by Loyola University Chicago School of Law, the Vis Pre-Moot is a premiere competition that gives teams a chance to prepare for the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in both Vienna and Hong Kong. Case Western took top honors in Chicago despite the heavy competition from nine top schools from the Midwestern region.

On top of the team victory, two first-year law students took home individual awards.  Teresa Azzam was awarded the best speaker award, closely followed by Daniel Kalmbach, who received second runner up for best speaker.

The team will compete in Pittsburgh in late February before heading to Vienna, Austria in March to represent Case Western on the international stage.
