Professor Cover weighs in on NSA spying controversy
Contention and controversy continue to dominate the gathering and use of intelligence by the National Security Administration through obtaining Americans’ internet and cell phone data. President Obama and some members of Congress have defended the practice. Other members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have asked the president to curtail the NSA’s data gathering activities. In an interview on WCPN’s “Sound of Ideas,” Professor Avidan Cover, Assistant Professor of Law and Director of the Institute for Global Security Law and Policy, discussed the potential for abuse of Ohio’s facial recognition software and other surveillance technology. Prof. Cover pointed out that the abuse potential exists as evidenced by the misuse of information by NSA officials. He discussed the facial recognition technology in terms of “Abuse, Accuracy, and Anonymity” and the privacy ramifications.
