International Careers

Over 600 Case Western Reserve University School of Law alumni list international or comparative law as their field of practice. Making their homes in more than 50 countries around the globe, many work at foreign law firms, overseas branches of U.S. law firms, and multinational corporations. Several work in the U.S. Department of State, the Agency for International Development, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, the Department of Defense, the Judge Advocate General Corps, the Customs Service, the International Trade Commission, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Others work for the U.N., International Criminal Tribunals, the World Bank, and other international organizations. School of Law alumni also include international law professors at the U.S. Air Force Academy, the University of Idaho, University of Utah, and Pepperdine University law schools. Together with the international law faculty and Career Services Office, our alumni mentor and help students launch careers in international law.

Our prominent international law alumni include: Amb. Capricia Penavic Marshall (JD ’90), who serves as the Obama Administration’s Chief of Protocol, a State Department position holding ambassadorial rank; Mohamed Ibn Chambas (JD '84), Secretary-General of the African, Caribbean, and Pacific Group of States, who was previously President (2007-11) and prior to that Executive Secretary (2002-07) of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS); John F. Sopko (JD ‘77), Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction; and Janet R. Donovan (JD ’83), the first woman to be appointed Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Navy Reserve at the rank of Rear Admiral.

Together with the international law faculty, and Career Services Office, our alumni mentor and help students launch international law careers.

“I came to Case with an interest in international trade law. My Cox Center-sponsored internship at the International Trade Center in Geneva, and my courses in international law and international business transactions helped me land a career doing what I love at the Office of General Counsel at the Department of Commerce.”

Ahran Kang McCloskey (JD ’05)
International Trade Attorney
Office of the Chief Counsel for Import Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce

“Case definitely prepared me for a challenging career in international law. The international law seminars, labs, and clinics were outstanding, and the professors have so many contacts in the field. I went from law school to a Cox Center-funded postgraduate internship with the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda in The Hague, followed by a position as legal officer to Chambers and to the President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha. Case also provided great training for my position as international trade counsel at Thompson Hine LLP in Washington, DC. I recently moved back to the field of international justice, where I serve as legal advisor in the Office of the Prosecutor at the Special Tribunal for Lebanon in The Hague.”
