Toronto, Canada
I lived in Morant Bay, Jamaica before that, and most recently immigrated to the States for law school from Cheongju, South Korea.
University of Toronto - Double Major: Criminology, Caribbean Studies; Minor: History
My favorite class is the CORE, Legal Research and Writing class. I really enjoy writing, and the mix of the different assignments: memorandums, motions to dismiss, and motions for summary judgment, allow students to try their hand and succeed at drafting a variety of different legal documents. This class teaches a lot of the practical writing skills you will be using as a lawyer and I enjoy this class far more than I do my substantive classes. The training that we receive in CORE is something not all law schools provide. This course sets us apart and trains us to be better legal writers.
My favorite professor, hands down, is Professor Yuri Linetsky. From the very start of orientation, it was just so refreshing and reassuring to have a smiling face there to greet you and work with you. Professor Linetsky has very high standards, but he makes himself accessible and approachable so that students feel comfortable enough to seek his guidance through the process. Professor Linetsky is not just an instructor, he is also a mentor. He has made the 1L experience for the Advocate section of the class of 2014 enjoyable, and I sincerely hope that he continues to provide his guidance and leadership to classes of 1Ls to come. With all the stress and anxiety that you’ll face, you’ll need as many friendly faces as you can get to support you through this.

When times get hard, don’t let your personality be the first thing to go. Law school demands everything of us and it’s easy to lose yourself in the process. Don’t let the law school squelch who you are as a person. Remember to do things that make you happy and keep you sane. There are an abundance of student groups on campus that will allow you to pursue your interests. These groups will also give you a chance to connect with upper-year students who have been where you are and have survived. Never let the rigor rob you of who you are.

Footnote:
Case is on the rise.
We are one of the only law schools in the country to have experienced any rise in median LSATs last year, and ours rose a whopping 2 points. Our university, ranked #37th by U.S. News & World Report, is attracting record numbers of applicants.
