The Services offered by our office include: academic, personal, and professional advising; facilitating access to University resources; student organization oversight; assisting students with disabilities; administration of student awards and prizes; programming; and assisting students with bar examination applications.
In addition to specific services, and in addition to the numerous activities offered by our student organizations, our office conducts several programs throughout the year.
Below are just some of the many programs, services, and activities offered by the Office for Student Services.
Community Receptions, Dean's Open Forums, and Social Activities
Sustaining our community of friends requires creating opportunities for open exchange with our students. Maintaining the lines of communication between students and our administration, faculty, and staff is just one of the goals of our Office. To this end, the Office for Student Services hosts community receptions once a month. These events provide an occasion for faculty, staff, administrators, and students to get to know one another in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. The Dean hosts periodic open forums with students, and the Deans’ Advisory Committee – a joint SBA and Student Services committee -- is another way for students and the administration to share ideas and discuss issues of concern. The law school community is further strengthened by our other social activities, such as our bowling tournament and 1L Games. Finally, in realizing the importance for all to contribute to the lives of others, our office coordinates volunteer projects during which students, faculty, administration and staff engage in service to the Greater Cleveland community.
Academic Enrichment Program
Our Academic Enrichment Program (AEP) assists students in growing their already exceptional skills for successful performance in law school. The Program has three components: a weekly lecture, weekly small group discussions, and one-on-one tutoring. The small group and individual sessions are led by second- or third-year students who have excelled in law school, yet demonstrate ability to facilitate learning of core tasks associated with legal education and communicating understanding of the law. Topics covered included the Socratic method, briefing and synthesizing case law, time and stress management, outlining legal principles, examination preparation and examination taking. AEP is open to all first-year students.
Academic Support Workshops
Dr. Carol Fox, Director of the Writing Center, presents programs on general academic success and exam preparation to interested first-year students. In addition, Dr. Fox leads the Plan Ahead to Pass the Bar presentations to third-year students.
1L Games
At the end of the first school year, our three first-year sections square-off in games such as Section Fight Song, Trivial Pursuit of Justice, the Betty Crocker, Esq. Bake-off, and Tug-of-War Crimes. The winning section has its section name written on the Golden Shoe Trophy to be displayed for years to come, and the victory is commemorated by a plaque that lists past winners.
Big Brothers Big Sisters Annual Bowl-a-thon
Each Spring Semester, Case Western Reserve School of Law teams up with BBBS of Greater Cleveland to raise money for this great community group. The School of Law has been committed to raising thousands of dollars each year for BBBS, while having fun bowling for great prizes, such as highest and lowest score, best team uniform, and best overall team performance.
Bar Exam
On the Student Home page of the intranet, you will find Links to
state bar websites that go directly to the websites of the state bar admission agencies for the states in which you may take the bar. You will find what subjects are tested, application deadlines, etc. Also on the intranet is information about commercial
bar review courses.
Take a Law Student to Lunch Program
This program pairs School of Law alumni with students, to give students the opportunity to meet with alumni who can share their perspectives and experiences and answer their questions about the legal profession, career paths, strategies for success, the job market, and more. The Office of Student Services matches interested students and alumni, and this program takes place in both the fall and spring semesters.
