Programs
In addition to specific services, and in addition to the numerous activities offered by our student organizations, our office conducts several programs throughout the year.
Below are just some of the many programs, services, and activities offered by our office:
Community Receptions, Dean's Forums with the Dean and Associate Deans, and Social Activities
Academic Enrichment Programs
Academic Support Workshops
1L Games
Big Brothers Big Sisters Annual Bowl-a-thon
Take a Law Student to Lunch Program
Making connections mentoring program
Community Receptions, Dean's Open Forums, and Social Activities
Sustaining our community of friends requires creating opportunities for open exchange with our students. Maintaining the lines of communication between students and our administration, faculty, and staff is just one of the goals of our office. To this end, we host community receptions once a month. These events provide an occasion for faculty, staff, administrators, and students to get to know one another in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. The Dean hosts periodic open forums at the school and informal gatherings at his home for students. The Deans’ Advisory Committee – a joint SBA and Student Services committee – is another way for students and the administration to share ideas and discuss issues of concern. The law school community is further strengthened by our other social activities, such as our bowling tournament and 1L Games. Our office also coordinates volunteer projects during which students, faculty, administration and staff engage in service to the Greater Cleveland community.
Academic Enrichment Program
Our Academic Enrichment Program (AEP) assists students in growing their already exceptional skills for successful performance in law school. The program has three components: a weekly lecture, weekly small group discussions, and one-on-one tutoring. The small group and individual sessions are led by second- or third-year students who have excelled in law school, who demonstrate the ability to facilitate learning of core tasks associated with legal education, and can communicate understanding of the law. Topics covered include the Socratic method, briefing and synthesizing case law, time and stress management, outlining legal principles, examination preparation and examination taking. AEP is open to all first-year students.
Academic Support Workshops
Dr. Carol Fox, our Director of the Writing Center, presents programs on general academic success and exam preparation to interested students. In addition, Dr. Fox leads the Plan Ahead to Pass the Bar presentations to third-year students.
1L Games
At the end of the first school year, our three first-year sections square-off in games such as Section Fight Song, Trivial Pursuit of Justice, the Betty Crocker, Esq. Bake-off, and Tug-of-War Crimes. The winning section has its section name written on the Golden Shoe Trophy to be displayed for years to come, and the victory is commemorated by a plaque that lists past winners.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Annual Bowl-a-thon
Each Spring Semester, we team up with BBBS of Greater Cleveland to raise money for this great community group. Our school has been committed to raising thousands of dollars each year for BBBS, while having fun bowling for great prizes, such as highest and lowest score, best team uniform, and best overall team performance.
Take a Law Student to Lunch Program
This program, managed by our Student Services and Career Services offices, pairs our alumni with students. This gives students the opportunity to meet with alumni who can share their perspectives and experiences, and also answer questions about the legal profession, career paths, strategies for success, the job market, and more. This program takes place in both the fall and spring semesters and both students and alumni look forward to these one-on-one lunches.
Making Connections Mentoring Program
This program, also managed by our Student Services and Career Services offices, provides students with alumni mentors who can offer career and professional advice through a series of lunchtime events. Alumni and students are placed in mentoring groups, and are invited to four events held downtown or at the law school. Each event features a guest speaker. This is yet another unique way our students stay engaged with our successful practicing alumni.
