Mr. Lawry came to our faculty after seven years' practice in Pittsburgh with Eckert, Seamans, Cherin & Mellott. He teaches Professional Responsibility, Criminal Law, Jurisprudence, and directs the Law School's Center for Professional Ethics. In the main, his publications have been in the area of ethics and professional responsibility; his most recent article is titled "Ethics in the Shadow of the Law," and appears at 52 Case Law Review 655 (2002). His essay, "One Tough Guy: Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.," won First Prize-Faculty in the University's 2001 Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest.
Personal Statement
"One of the best things about this law school is the easy collegiality that exists between and among the faculty, the administration and the students. The basis of teaching is friendship, Plato wrote. We have made a good start here."
It is in the lawyer's office that the fullest integration of good lawyer and good person occurs. Here, the lawyer is called upon to help another person or persons accomplish something; to avoid trouble, extricate themselves, exercise the rights of free persons. The lawyer explains, expands, cajoles, debates. This is the place for the moral dialogue between and among autonomous persons to occur. Lawyers must try to keep clients law-compliant. This is a complex matter."
R. Lawry, The Central Moral Tradition of Lawyering,
19 Hofstra Law Review 311, 353 (1990).

Footnote:
Case is on the rise.
We are one of the only law schools in the country to have experienced any rise in median LSATs last year, and ours rose a whopping 2 points. Our university, ranked #37th by U.S. News & World Report, is attracting record numbers of applicants.
