Diversity Initiatives
The Stephanie Tubbs Jones Summer Legal Academy, a partnership of Case Western Reserve University School of Law, the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, the Norman S. Minor Bar Association, and Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, introduces promising African-American high school students to the legal profession. At the Academy, 20 to 25 twelfth grade students participate in a two-week, full day intensive law institute. The Academy presents a case and takes students through the discovery, interview process, and development of both the prosecution and defense sides of the case, and culminates in a Mock Trial, all under the supervision of lawyers and judges. Students also have the opportunity to earn a one-month part-time internship and a small stipend.


The mission of the Academy is to reduce the overwhelming racial inequity in membership of the local bar and bench by introducing minority students to their potential to succeed in college and law school. Cleveland Municipal Court Judge Ronald Adrine, one of the co-founders of the program, states: "Frequently, young minority students labor under the mistaken notion that a career in law is beyond their reach. The Academy services to expand their vision and broaden their horizon."

The Academy attracts students from inner-city and first-ring suburban high schools, as well as greater Cleveland area public and parochial high schools. The 2009 Academy was hosted by Case Western Reserve University School of Law and funded by Case Western, the Law School Admission Council, and the US. District Court, N.D. Ohio.
