Alumni Services

Graduates of our Law School are welcome to visit and use the library. Although the Law School's entrances are locked after 6:30 p.m. weekdays and all day on weekends, the library remains open to the public. A security guard on duty is available to provide access.

Access to Premier Online Research Tools for Recent Graduates If you are a recent graduate who has not yet taken the bar, you may continue to access Lexis and Westlaw databases, as well as Bloomberg and Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction resources (CALI) through the July bar exam. More information about alumni access to these services.

Library Cards and Databases for Alumni Alumni may apply for a library card and use an active CWRU username and password to access select research databases. After receiving your card these resources are available to you at any time.

Online Application for an Alumni Library Card

We allow on-site borrowing of up to 10 books at a time from our circulating collection and 5 books at a time from the OhioLINK & SearchOhio circulating collection. Circulating materials do not include:
  • All or parts of multi-volume sets (e.g. statutes, casebooks or digests)
  • Looseleafs
  • Materials on Reserve
  • Materials located in the Reference section
  • AV materials

You have access to our law library’s reference desk (216-368-5206 / lawref@case.edu) for research and other library assistance. The university’s [U]Tech Service Desk (368-HELP/368-4357) also provides unlimited, ongoing service to alumni with technology questions.

Our public workstations and law databases in the library, including LexisNexis Academic, are available to you free of charge. In addition, we have one workstation dedicated to Bloomberg BNA/Patron Access for Bloomberg Law. Our library has a free, unsecured guest network for internet access inside our building.

Free Access to HeinOnline Law Database You have limited access to an interdisciplinary, alumni-licensed database known as HeinOnline. It contains more than 1,700 law and law-related journals with a broader range of coverage than Westlaw or LexisNexis combined. ABA Law Library Collection Periodicals contains digital access to over 100 ABA-related periodicals, including 44 periodicals previously available only to ABA section members, and provides access to current volumes of included periodicals, covering all subject areas of American law.

Authorization to login requires an active network ID/password. Don’t remember your login? No problem. You may reset your password by using this password reset tool or calling the [U]Tech Service Desk at 216-368-HELP (4357).

Guest Services

Library Access If you are not affiliated with Case Western Reserve University, you may still use our library services by presenting a photo ID at the circulation desk. Although law school entrances are locked after 6:30 p.m. weekdays and on weekends, the library remains open to the public. A security guard on duty is available to provide access.

Research Assistance Our public workstations offer selected proprietary legal databases, including LexisNexis Academic and Bloomberg BNA/Patron Access for Bloomberg Law. Our library has a free, unsecured guest network for internet access inside our building. You may ask us for research assistance in person at the reference desk or by phone. Ohio laws do not allow our staff to give legal advice, including interpretation of statutory or case law. If you need legal advice, please consult an attorney. You may find one by using a directory, such as Martindale.com or Avvo.

Borrowing Materials Our library collections are not available for direct circulation to persons not affiliated with Case Western Reserve University. However, those affiliated with OhioLINK member institutions may borrow circulating material via Ohiolink. Non-affiliated researchers are welcome to have their home institutions place an interlibrary loan on their behalf.

Computer and Printing Services Guests may access online resources through two public access terminals located next to our reference desk in the library. Two additional computers are available on the third floor. Printing and copies cost $0.15 per page. A CCTV is located on the main floor of the library, next to the public computer, for the visually impaired. Patrons needing headphones for the Microsoft accommodations software may borrow them from our circulation desk.
