Distinguished alumna visits and participates in pipeline program
Judy Steiner ’87 - Executive Vice President/Risk Management - Corporate Secretary and General Counsel of FirstMerit Corp.
We welcomed Judy Steiner ’87 back to the law school on July 13, 2011. Steiner is Executive Vice President/Risk Management-Corporate Secretary and General Counsel of FirstMerit Corp., a diversified financial services company headquartered in Akron, Ohio, with assets of $14.1 billion as of December 31, 2010 and 207 banking offices and 220 ATMs in Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, and Chicago areas. At FirstMerit, Steiner is responsible for the following areas of the Corporation: Legal, Compliance, CRA, Insurance, Security/Fraud and AML/BSA. She returned to the law school and met with high school students participating in our annual Law & Leadership Summer Institute.
Stated Steiner of the experience, “I hold special memories of my time at CWRU Law. As the recipient of a full merit scholarship, I am forever indebted to the school for opening the door to my career opportunities. My legal education provided me with the foundation for my present position as General Counsel, Chief Risk Officer and Secretary of a public financial institution. To that end, it is especially important to me to give back to the Law School. As a full merit scholar recipient, while I have no legal obligation to repay CWRU Law, I believe I have a duty to do for present students, with my time and financial support, what others provided for me. I had the privilege of returning to the Law School as a guest speaker to the high school students participating in the Law and Leadership Institute. These students come from challenging backgrounds and environments; their dedication, receptiveness and eagerness overwhelmed me. I am convinced I got back from the experience tenfold more than what I gave.”

Case is on the rise.
We are one of the only law schools in the country to have experienced any rise in median LSATs last year, and ours rose a whopping 2 points. Our university, ranked #37th by U.S. News & World Report, is attracting record numbers of applicants.
