Moot court team excels at International Arbitration competition
Seven students from Case Western Reserve University School of Law competed in the William C. Vis International Arbitration Moot Court Competition in Hong Kong, China during the last week of March. The Vis competition featured 65 law schools from 17 countries from every region of the world, arguing an issue of international commercial law before panels of the world’s foremost arbitrators. This was the first time Case Law School has sent a team to the prestigious international competition.
In the preliminary rounds, the Case team faced teams from India, Japan, Korea, and Germany. Based on its superb performance on the briefs and preliminary round oral arguments, the Case team was ranked as one of the top sixteen teams and advanced to the elimination round, where Case lost a close decision to Hong Kong University.
In making it to the elimination round, Case advanced further than other U.S. teams such as Harvard and Georgetown.
In addition to making it to the round of 16, 1L Case Law Student Obi Okuh was awarded the Honorable Mention Oralist award. The other members of the Case team were 2L David Coddon, 2L Jeannette Tran, 2L Mark Freudenthal, 1L Will Baynard, 2L Scott Nakama, 3L Kuan Yeh, 2L Garrison Mason, and LLM student Yang Bai. The team was coached by Visiting Law Professor John Groetzinger.
Case Western Reserve University School of Law’s outstanding performance in the Vis competition in Hong Kong comes on the heels of winning the 2009 Niagara International Law Moot Court competition in Toronto and the International Rounds of the 2008 Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in DC.
